Link Between WI-IL Border Cities Planned

View Larger MapA bike trail between border cities of Beloit and Janesville in Wisconsin is peddling forward. This bike trail is significant because it is not far from the northern end of the Great Illinois Trail (G.I.T.) and the trail linking Madison to the G.I.T. The Rock County Board of Supervisors is exploring options to establish a bike route between Afton and Big Hill Park in Beloit, Wisconsin, with a connection to bicycle trails in northern Illinois.

The trail between the two cities has been a goal since 1992, when a coalition of city and business partners realized the benefits this trail could bring to local businesses. One of the proposed routes would go through Afton, turn west on Third Street and then over Bass Creek. Another option would have the bike trail travel along South Duggan Road. At this time, there is no expected time table for completion.

Bicycling in Wisconsin is huge park of the recreational economy. There are some estimates that bicycling in Wisconsin provides more to the local economy in that state than deer hunting. And if you know anything about Wisconsin, you know that the only things typically thought of as bigger than deer hunting are beer, cheese, and the Packers. Now it looks like you can add bicycling to that list.
